Introducing our 2026 College Leadership Team!
Sharyn Quirk
Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 7!
With just a little over two weeks remaining in Term 2, there’s a strong sense of focus and momentum across the community. Classrooms are busy, co-curricular activities are in full swing, and students are working towards a positive finish to the term.
We are also celebrating the creativity and talent within our community as we welcome the Winter Performing Arts Showcase Series. Last Tuesday’s Drama performance was a wonderful start, and we look forward to the upcoming Showcase of Music evening on Wednesday 18 and the Celebration of Dance on Friday 20. These events are a testament to our students' commitment, collaboration, and passion — and a reminder of the many ways learning and expression come to life at Stella Maris.
Thank you for your continued support as we move through this important part of the school year.
This past Sunday, we celebrated Pentecost—one of the most significant feasts in the Christian calendar. Falling 50 days after Easter, Pentecost takes its name from the Greek word pentēkostē, meaning “fiftieth.” This marks a rich connection to the Jewish tradition of Shavuot, which also occurs 50 days after Passover and commemorates the giving of the Law to Moses at Mount Sinai. For Christians, Pentecost is the moment when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, giving them the courage and clarity to go out and share the message of Jesus. Often described as the “birthday of the Church,” Pentecost reminds us of the transformative power of the Spirit, and of the ways we are called to use our unique gifts with purpose, compassion, and faith in the world around us.
We are proud to share a moment that reflects the strength of character and community spirit nurtured in our students.
Earlier this week, a member of the public wrote to share his appreciation for one of our Year 12 students, who was instrumental in assisting a gentleman who had fallen at Dee Why with a suspected dislocated shoulder. Calm and composed, she phoned the ambulance, offered reassurance, and remained with him until help arrived.
The witness described her actions as "an act of fortitude and self-sacrifice" and added, "She is a credit to you and her family. Our community needs more like-minded members."
We are delighted to share that this remarkable young woman is our Vice Captain, Destiny J, who continues to exemplify the values of leadership, empathy, and service.
We commend her on her outstanding response and thank the community member for taking the time to recognise and honour her actions. Moments like these remind us of the profound impact our students can have—both within and beyond the school gates.
Congratulations to Year 11 students Saoirse F and Amelie R, along with their teacher Ms Han, for their meaningful participation in the Annual Defence of Sydney Commemoration Service. This important event honours the courage and sacrifice of those who defended our harbour during World War II, and it was a privilege for our College to be represented. Saoirse and Amelie were invited to lay a wreath as part of the ceremony, a gesture that reflects both the solemnity of the occasion and the esteem in which they were held. The girls were outstanding ambassadors—poised, respectful, and deeply engaged with the significance of the day. Sincere thanks to Ms Han for her leadership in organising our involvement and for preparing the students so thoughtfully. We are proud of their contribution and the way they upheld the values of our community.
Stella Day arrived in all its glory on Friday 30 May—and what a marvellous celebration it was! As one of the most cherished days in our College calendar, it truly lived up to its reputation, bursting with spirit, joy, and tradition. We paused the ordinary and embraced an extraordinary day of unity, gratitude, and fun, celebrating all that makes our Stella community so special.
We began with a joyful and uplifting Mass, honouring Mary, the mother of Christ, and giving heartfelt thanks to our Founders, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan. Their legacy of compassion, service, and faith was felt deeply throughout the day, reminding us of the values that continue to shape and inspire our College.
From there, the celebrations took flight! The campus was alive with colour, laughter, and energy as students embraced this year’s theme—“Decades”—with boundless creativity. Whether dressed in leg warmers, shoulder pads, flares or scrunchies, the girls threw themselves into the spirit of the day with enthusiasm and flair.
Stella Day wasn’t just an event—it was a powerful reminder of who we are, where we’ve come from, and what we can achieve when we come together as one. It was a day filled with pride, connection, and unforgettable moments. Here's to the joy of Stella Day—and to the vibrant spirit that continues to shine in every corner of our community!
We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of our Stella Maris students in the final results of the prestigious da Vinci Decathlon. Competing against 50 and 80 highly competitive schools in each year group, our teams displayed remarkable creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking across a wide range of disciplines.
The da Vinci Decathlon is a nationally recognised academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Named after the ultimate Renaissance thinker, Leonardo da Vinci, the competition encourages students to think laterally and work collaboratively. Teams of eight students compete across ten diverse disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics and Chess, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography, and Legacy.
Our Stella girls embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and excellence:
Year 11 placed 12th overall, earning 1st place in both Ideation and Legacy, along with 6th in English, and 15th in Art and Poetry, Code Breaking, and Creative Producers—an extraordinary effort!
Year 10 achieved 9th in English and 12th in Engineering, demonstrating sharp thinking and teamwork.
Year 9 impressed with 9th in Creative Producers and 13th in Code Breaking, highlighting their innovation and problem-solving skills.
Year 8 shone with an 8th place finish in Ideation, showing wonderful originality and collaborative spirit.
We are incredibly proud of all our students who took part in this intellectually demanding event. Their resilience, creativity, and teamwork were on full display, and they represented the College with distinction and grace.
A heartfelt congratulations to all members of our 2025 da Vinci teams:
Year 7 – Skye A, Olivia L, Izzy M, Lauren P, Hannah P, Mia R, Hailey R, Amisha S
Year 8 – Mabel B, Emma D, Femke E, Ella G, Maya H, Ava M, Emily M, Lucy M
Year 9 – Cailey A, Katie C, Chiara D, Isla K, Ruby M, Karina O, Erin R, Charlotte S
Year 10 – Natalia B, Grace E, Harper F, Amy H, Lucy K, Pip Q
Year 11 – Zara D, Katie E, Ava J, Georgia M, Rose M, Jess O, Caitlin R, Bronte S
Thank you to the dedicated staff, Ms Cath Douglas, Ms Christina Kalanic, and Ms Jocelyn Christiansen who supported our teams throughout the preparation and competition. Your encouragement and guidance played a vital role in this success.
Congratulations, girls—you’ve made us proud!
It is with great pride and excitement that we announce the 2026 College Captains and Prefects — a remarkable group of students who have been selected for their outstanding character, leadership qualities, and unwavering commitment to our school.
2026 Leadership Team
We warmly acknowledge and thank our 2025 student leaders, whose dedication and leadership have left an enduring mark on our community. Their influence and achievements will be remembered and built upon in the years to come.
To our newly appointed 2026 leaders — congratulations! Thank you for your willingness to lead with integrity, compassion, and a strong sense of service. We look forward to witnessing the energy, creativity, and vision you will bring to your roles.
Let us all join together — students, staff, and families — in celebrating this new chapter and offering our full support to the 2026 College Leadership Team as they guide and inspire our community in the year ahead.
Here’s to a vibrant year of leadership, connection, and shared success!
It is with great pride and heartfelt congratulations that we share the extraordinary achievement of one of our distinguished alumni, Gina Marshall (née Papallo), former School Captain of Stella Maris College, Class of 1975.
At the inaugural Broken Bay Diocesan Awards held on 30 May 2025, Gina was enrolled as a Dame of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St Sylvester by Bishop Anthony Randazzo. This prestigious honour, conferred under the seal of the late Pope Francis, is one of the highest awards that can be bestowed on a layperson by the Catholic Church.
Gina’s life has been one of devoted service to her faith and community. A lifelong member of the Manly Freshwater Parish, Gina received all her sacraments at Mary Immaculate Church and began singing in the parish choir at the age of 15.
Over the next five decades, she served in various capacities — chorister, cantor, conductor, and eventually choir administrator — often working alongside her mother, the late Kath Papallo OAM.
Gina’s commitment to the Church extended well beyond the music ministry. With a deep passion for theology and liturgical education, she pursued multiple academic qualifications, most recently completing a Master’s Degree in Theology at the Australian Catholic University. Her influence has been deeply felt in the liturgical and spiritual life of both the Diocese of Broken Bay and the Sydney Archdiocese, particularly in the education sector.
We are especially proud to acknowledge that Gina is the first woman from the Diocese of Broken Bay to be awarded this papal honour — a truly historic and inspiring achievement.
On behalf of the College community, we congratulate Gina and celebrate her remarkable journey.
As we near the close of the term, may we continue to focus on steady progress and supporting each student to finish well. Our values of respect, integrity, compassion, and excellence remain central as we work together each day.
Thank you for your ongoing support. As always, it plays an important role in helping our students stay engaged and on track.
We look forward to a strong finish to Term 2.
Warm regards

Thank you, Grandad, for sharing your love of Harry Potter. He lovingly bought the entire collection for his granddaughter to enjoy. Every book cover in the set is stunning, and L. was thrilled to begin the magical/heroic adventure.
By connecting with L.’s interests and sharing his love of Harry Potter, Grandad helped make reading a loving, exciting, and meaningful experience.
For this wonderful act of encouragement, we’re naming Grandad our Unsung Hero and awarding a special merit in her house colour. 😊
When parents, grandparents and Stella work together, amazing things happen!

A.I. (Artificial Intelligence)
If your assignment says you can use AI tools (like ChatGPT), you must say where you got the information from. If you don’t, it might be seen as cheating (this is called Academic Misconduct).
You should clearly show:
Sometimes, it's hard to get the same answer again from an AI tool just by asking the same question. So, if the AI gives you a link to share the answer, include that link when you explain where your information came from (OpenAI, 2025; University of Queensland, N.D).
Always be honest about what’s your own work and what came from somewhere else.

Limited tickets available for Performing Arts Winter Series...
Evan Browett
Head of Performing Arts
To complement Stella Day’s annual ‘Lip Sync Battle’, this year we hosted our first ever ‘Battle of the Bands’. There were seven bands from Years 8-12 performing: ‘4th Fret’, ‘Redbosè’, ‘Oops’, ‘Senior Contemporary Band’, ‘GAME4’, ‘The Avenue’, ‘Tapeworms and Ladders’ and ‘Miss Adventure’. There was even a special appearance from ‘The Academic Afternoons’ (teacher band) featuring a very special guest performing ‘Teenage Dirtbag’.
First place ended up going to ‘The Avenue’ from Year 10, with their cover of Paramore’s ‘Ain’t it Fun’. The event was a roaring success and will no doubt be making a comeback in 2026.
On Tuesday evening, the Drama Gala launched our Winter Performing Arts Concert Series with an unforgettable showcase of talent, humour, and theatrical flair. The evening featured three standout ensembles: the Play Production Ensemble opened with a hilarious performance of When Bad Things Happen to Good Actors, followed by the Theatresports and Improvisation's take on Whose Line is it Anyway and concluding with a range of high-energy Broadway numbers from the Musical Theatre Ensemble. The night was a true celebration of the hard work, creativity, and dedication of all our Semester 1 Drama ensembles. A big round of applause to all of our performers and backstage crew and huge thanks to Ms Nicola and her hard work in preparing the event.
A reminder that there are limited tickets available for the final two nights in our Winter Performing Arts Concert Series.

We are nearing the end of a very successful Cross Country season. The team has been training since Term 1 and competed in the IGSA and CGSSSA carnivals, as well as a number of students progressing through to the NSWCCC and NSW All Schools Carnivals.
The CGSSSA Carnival was held on Thursday 29 May at Bicentennial Park. Stella had a big team competing at this event and had fantastic results, winning medals across almost every age group. Congratulations to the students who finished in the top six and progressed through to the NSWCCC Carnival:
All of these students were selected to compete at the NSWCCC Cross Country Championships which were held at Sydney International Equestrian Centre on June 11. They all ran so well and should be proud of their fantastic results. All of the Stella students finished in the top 25 places – an amazing achievement at State level. Special mention to the students who finished in the top ten and have been selected into the NSWCCC team to run at All Schools in Term 3:
Well done also to the students who won the Gold Medal in the teams event:
Congratulations to the Stella netball teams who played at the NSW Netball Schools Cup at Curl Curl on Thursday 5 June. Both Stella teams played well all day, with the Year 9/10 team going through the day undefeated, and the Year 7/8 team only losing one game. The final placings were determined on for/against, with Stella finishing 2nd and 4th overall.
The Peninsula Cup competition is coming to a close, with one week left of round games. The season has been great this year, with all Stella teams playing well and improving over the season.
It is finals time for the MWBA basketball competition! All of the Stella teams have had a great season, with 7 of our 9 teams progressing through to the semi finals next week! Good luck to 7 Green, 7 Red, 7/8 White, 8 Red, 9 Red, 10 Red and 10 Green.
Grading days for the Semester 2 competition will be held at Curl Curl Youth Centre at 7.15am on June 24 (Year 8) and June 26 (Year 7).
Congratulations to Jade G and Amber K who have been selected into the NSWCCC Football team. This is an outstanding achievement as it is a very competitive sport with only one team selected. Good luck to both when they play at the NSW All Schools Tournament in Lake Macquarie next week.
Stella is entering a number of teams into the Peninsula Cup Soccer competition in Term 3. Grading trials will be held before the end of Term 2 at Keirle Park at 7.15am on 18 June and 23 June for all players in Years 7 – 9.
Good luck to our Futsal teams who will play at the CGSSSA and NSW Futsal Schools Championships in the coming weeks.
Fundraising opportunities for Cambodia!
Linda Silburn
Co-ordinator of Duke of Edinburgh Award
Hi everyone!
As usual, the Duke of Ed program is packed at this time of year! Some of our upcoming events include:
As the Cambodia trip approaches, we’re running several donations drives and a live auction. This is an incredible opportunity for our school community to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children living in poverty. Before the group departs, we’re aiming to raise as much money and gather as many donations as possible to take over.
One major way we’re raising funds is through our online auction, which went live on May 26 and will run for two weeks. You and your family can browse and bid on items like gift vouchers, jewellery, and various products. If nothing catches your eye, you can also donate directly through the site to support the cause.
In addition to fundraising, we’re also holding three donation drives.
As we prepare to support Good Samaritan schools in Cambodia, we’re collecting general stationery including pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers, rulers, anything small and useful for school. Our goal is to make around 300 pencil cases full of school supplies for the children. If you have any of these items lying around at home, bring them in! Drop them in the box at Student Reception and let Student Services know it's for the Duke of Ed Stationery Drive.
Before we leave for Cambodia, we are holding a sanitary drive where we will be collecting tampons, pads, and especially new period underwear to support young girls in Cambodia. These items are going to make a huge different in the lives of women and girls within Cambodia. Thank you for your contribution.
As we approach our Cambodia trip, we’re also running a clothing drive to support local families in need. Please consider donating clean, summer-appropriate clothing in good condition. Your generosity can make a real difference.
Every contribution is truly appreciated, so thank you for your support. Final donations are due Tuesday 17 June.

Thank you to all those who attended the AGM. The minutes will be in the following edition. We are delighted to welcome/welcome back the following P&F team onto the newly elected committee.
A huge thank you to Nicole Bruin, who has been our Treasurer for four years and would have continued if we hadn't had a willing candidate.
We are still searching for the head honcho, the leader who can help pull this all together. Here is the job description:
The President provides leadership and direction for the P&F by working collaboratively with the Principal and Executive Committee to support the school community. They chair meetings, ensure agendas are prepared and minutes endorsed, and promote the aims of the P&F in all dealings. The President supports fellow committee members, ensures meetings run efficiently, and presents the annual President’s Report.
If you are interested, please reach out to Sue Homann at the College.
Please be patient as the new team get to grips with their roles. I’m not completely disappearing, just taking a smaller role whilst I work on a personal passion project.
