1000 Worms Find a New Home at Stella

by David Ford and Violet Warner

Mission prefects, Bronte S and Eleni H have taken on a composting initiative that they hope will inspire a generation of Stella students. Our school maintenance leader, Arthur, built two enclosed outdoor compost containers that the prefects are using to break down materials that would normally be thrown into rubbish bins.

“We are starting small using the maintenance team's green waste, and Canteen food scraps. Once we get into the full swing of composting, we hope to get every Stella student separating their food waste and using the right materials to add to the worms,” Eleni said.

Both Bronte and Eleni introduced the worms to their new Stella home and are hopeful they will love their surrounds and hungrily consume Stella’s food and garden waste.

Bronte added, “we are hoping to create a compost club next year with students that are keen to get involved in this project. We will be asking all year levels to get involved in this if they are keen."

Both Eleni and Bronte are happy the Northern Beaches Council are trialling food composting bins and will be researching how best to recycle waste at their school. Well done Bronte and Eleni, alongside the other student leaders, for introducing this great initiative.
