Welcome to Week 3!

Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
As Term 3 settles into its rhythm, our College has already experienced moments of great significance, joy, and purpose. The opening and blessing of the Polding Centre marked not only the unveiling of a remarkable new learning space, but also a celebration of our shared vision for the future. At the same time, our students and staff continue to engage wholeheartedly in the life of the College—with academic focus, creative energy, and a spirit of connection that enriches our community in countless ways.
On Tuesday 29 July, our College community came together in faith and celebration for the official opening and blessing of the Polding Centre—a transformative new space for teaching, learning, and collaboration. This landmark occasion marks a significant chapter in our College’s story, one that honours the vision and values that have shaped us and signals our continued commitment to educational excellence.
We were deeply honoured to be joined by the Most Reverend Bishop Anthony Randazzo, who led us in blessing the new Centre, and by our Parish Priests, Fr Chima and Fr Sam, as well as Seminarian Alfred and Fr Robert. Their prayerful presence grounded the celebration in a spirit of reverence and gratitude.
This was a day rich in symbolism and meaning. The name “Polding” honours Archbishop John Bede Polding, founder of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, whose legacy of compassion, courage, and educational leadership continues to inspire us. Archbishop Polding held a deep belief in the power of education to transform lives and communities—a vision this new building now carries forward.
The Polding Centre stands as more than bricks and mortar. It represents our shared hopes for the future—a space where imagination and curiosity are nurtured, where collaboration flourishes, and where students are inspired to become thoughtful, compassionate, and courageous leaders.
We were privileged to welcome a number of special guests for this occasion: past Principals, members of our College Board and Committees, Sisters of the Good Samaritan, Good Samaritan Education, alumni, and current and former parents. Among them, we were especially moved by the presence of our oldest alumna, Margaret Duffy (who commenced in 1940), who at 98 years old reminded us of the enduring legacy of our College across generations.
We were also pleased to welcome Principals from St Scholastica’s, St Patrick’s Campbelltown, Mount St Benedict’s, and Mr Jonathan Byrne from St Augustine’s. Their presence and collegial support were greatly appreciated.
The celebration was enriched by the beautiful Mass prepared by Ines Paxton, and the glorious music led by Ines and Leanne Haines and the College Choir. We extend our heartfelt thanks to them both—the liturgy and music elevated the day and left a lasting impression on all who attended.
Our gratitude also goes to those who brought the Polding Centre into being: former Principal Elizabeth Carnegie and the College Board for their foresight; our architects Jayne and Darren and the JDH team, whose design brings vision to life; Brett Moore and Kane Constructions; Sam Wolf-Gillings and Mostyn Copper; and our financial partners, whose generous support has helped shape a future for generations to come.
To our staff who arrived early to set up, moved furniture, welcomed guests, and ensured every detail was attended to with care—thank you. Your quiet dedication allowed the day to unfold with grace and beauty.
A special thank you to Sue Homann, Genevieve McGrath, Mark Cruise, and Ava Adlam, for their thoughtful planning and seamless execution of this significant event. Your behind-the-scenes leadership ensured that every element of the Opening and Blessing reflected the spirit, values, and aspirations of our College.
And to the staff and students who navigated the building process with patience and good humour—thank you for embracing change with such generosity of spirit.
We extend our warmest wishes to our Year 12 students as they undertake their Trial Examinations, which commenced on Monday, 4 August and continue through to Monday, 18 August.
This is a significant moment in their final year, offering an opportunity to consolidate learning, practise examination techniques, and build confidence ahead of the HSC. We commend them for their focus, resilience, and determination, and we encourage them to approach each exam with a calm mind and a steady heart.
To our Year 12 families and teachers—thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement during this important time.
From Thursday, 31 July to Saturday, 2 August, four of our Year 10 students proudly represented the College at the Good Samaritan Education (GSE) Prophetic Voices Conference.
Held over three days, the conference brought together students from GSE schools across New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, creating a vibrant and collegial space for young people to share ideas, reflect on issues that matter, and collaborate on meaningful action. The gathering provided a valuable opportunity for students to listen to one another, build connections, and grow in their understanding of how they can be agents of change within their own school communities.
This year’s conference focused on two key areas of concern raised by students: mental health and supporting the vulnerable and marginalised in rural and remote areas. With courage and compassion, participants explored ways to respond to these challenges and began developing school-based action plans to bring their initiatives to life.
We congratulate and thank our four Year 10 ambassadors—Grace E, Alexis Hall, Roisin O, and Natalia B — who represented the College with thoughtfulness, intelligence, and maturity. Their articulate contributions and respectful engagement were a credit to them and to our community.
Our sincere thanks also to staff members Sarah Metcalfe and Margaret Heraghty, who generously accompanied the students and supported them throughout the experience. Your presence and guidance made this opportunity possible.
We look forward to seeing the insights and initiatives from Prophetic Voices woven into the life of our College in the months ahead.
As we move through the early weeks of Term 3 and walk the corridors of the newly opened Polding Centre, may we do so with a deep sense of pride, purpose, and gratitude. Let this new space be more than just a building—let it be a daily reminder of what’s possible when vision, collaboration, and commitment come together.
May the weeks ahead be filled with curiosity, courage, and connection. Let’s continue to support one another, strive for excellence, and make the most of the rich opportunities that lie within our vibrant College life.
Wishing you all a purposeful and fulfilling Term 3.
Warm regards,

News from our Visual Arts department
by Marisa Quick, Head of Visual Arts
We were excited to welcome ‘Kindifarm’ to Stella last week for a Year 7 Visual Arts incursion: ‘Animals Alive’!
Our budding artists spent the morning developing their drawing and observation skills as well as learning a little about ‘life drawing’ (drawing something in real life)..and in this case a two week old piglet, a baby calf also about two weeks old as well as goats, ducklings, chickens and guinea pigs: those life drawing models were very wriggly!
Our students experimented with a variety of materials: charcoal, graphite, and white pencil on black paper to experience the different results, and experiment with tone, texture and composition.
The students had a lovely time and were thoughtful with the animals, being quiet and calm as well as doing a wonderful job focusing on the task at hand. We have some wonderful drawings from the morning which the students can develop upon in class.
It was so lovely to have the animals visit and a bit of a treat for the other year groups (and teachers!) to come and say hello also.

A busy term for Social Justice...
Sarah Metcalfe
Social Justice Program Coordinator
At the end of Term 2, I had the privilege of participating in an immersion experience to Timor Leste, organised by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan. This eight-day journey brought together staff from affiliated schools across New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, offering a powerful opportunity to witness the work the Sisters have facilitated in communities in need.
Throughout our time in Timor Leste, we visited sites of deep cultural and historical significance, learning about the country's complex and often painful history—from Portuguese colonisation, to Indonesian occupation, and finally, to their hard-won independence in 2002. Despite its past struggles, Timor Leste is a country rich in resilience, filled with people whose hope and vision for the future is inspiring.
Our group was deeply moved by the warm and heartfelt welcomes we received in schools and tribal communities, often expressed through music, dance, and song. We stayed with local families in homestay accommodation, sharing meals and stories, and immersing ourselves in daily life. We spent time in classrooms with students from kindergarten through to Year 12, assisted with medical outreach and food drive programs, climbed mountains to connect with remote communities, and came together in moments of shared prayer.
Timor Leste is Australia’s closest neighbour yet remains unfamiliar to many. It is a beautiful country shaped by hardship but alive with hope. I am incredibly grateful to the College and to the Sisters of the Good Samaritan for the opportunity to be part of such a transformative experience.
Marisa Quick
Head of Visual Arts
Four Year 10 students Grace E, Roisin O’N, Natalia BF, and Alexis H represented Stella at the Prophetic Voices gathering, joining peers from nine Good Samaritan Education schools from across Australia for three days of inspiration, connection, and Social Justice action. The students were active participants and were instrumental in the final drafting of key statements they worked collaboratively to develop.
The Prophetic Voices gathering culminated in the Ever Ancient, Ever New conference at Australian Catholic University and our students were confident public speakers addressing over 150 people in the audience. They held their own with aplomb and with a quiet, gentle and assertive presence answered complex questions from the public in the final Q&A session.
The Conference marked the final stage of work that the students had been a part of over their previous four terms. Roisin, Natalia and Alexis were particularly focused upon the issue of mental health in youth today and how to tackle this from the school perspective. They developed a statement that outlined the key issue of loneliness and provided practical ideas to combat this issue that is on the rise, such as across grade connection points, a drop box to signal anonymously if something is awry and the ability to not be a bystander to instances of bullying in our community and to act with genuine empathy.
Grace worked on the statement regarding inclusive education for rural and marginalised communities. After listening to guest speakers from the remote Northern Territory it was clear that First Nations people represented high rates in this category. Grace was pivotal in addressing the key issues of minimal school attendance in the children and the misplaced “western” perspective of these school communities needing more fund raising and materials where in fact this was not the case and they required consistent teaching staff to stay in these challenging and remote communities to forge relationships and the ability to fuse Indigenous culture with the western syllabus to make their education meaningful to their local context.
Over three days, students engaged in hands-on workshops, thought provoking discussions, keynote addresses, and collaborative projects, exploring how young people can be bold, compassionate leaders in today’s world. Their experience was both energising and enriching as to how young people can lead with hope and courage. They returned not only with fresh ideas for action within our own school community but also with new friendships formed with students from the nine other Good Samaritan schools. These connections will be a genuine treasure for years to come. Our girls particularly built rapport with our fellow SGS school, Rosebank College.
As reflected by Year 10 student Roisin O’N:
“We were able to learn from other schools’ social justice initiatives, collaborate on shared goals, and truly feel part of something bigger,”
The Stella Mission team looks forward to continuing this important work, inspired by the call to be prophetic voices for justice, peace, and hope.

A busy term for Social Justice...

Timor Leste Immersion Experience

Year 10 Stella Students Lend Their Voices to Prophetic Change
