Welcome to Week 7!
Sharyn Quirk
Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Our College has been alive with energy—whether in the classroom, on the sporting field, or on the stage, there is a palpable sense of vibrancy in all that our students and staff undertake. The joy of learning, the commitment to excellence, and the enthusiasm with which our community embraces every opportunity continues to remind me of the strength and spirit that defines our College.
Our Year 12 students have been receiving valuable feedback following their Trial Examinations. These insights are helping them to sharpen their focus, consolidate their understanding, and address areas of challenge. The next four weeks provide a precious window to refine their skills, deepen their confidence, and prepare themselves to enter the HSC with courage, clarity, and determination.
Meanwhile, our Year 11 students are turning their attention towards their Preliminary Examinations. This stage is a vital milestone, as the learning undertaken in the Preliminary courses lays the foundation for success in Year 12. Embedding these core concepts now, with commitment and discipline, will not only strengthen their understanding but also equip them with the resilience and habits of mind needed for the final year of school.
Our Dance Ensembles have been shining brightly across Sydney, participating in a range of competitions with energy, style, and remarkable talent. Their outstanding performances have been rewarded with multiple placings across categories, a testament not only to their skill but also to their commitment and teamwork. We are deeply proud of the way they have represented Stella—graceful on stage, gracious off stage, and always true ambassadors of our College values. Their achievements are a reflection of countless hours of rehearsal, the guidance of their teachers, and the passion they bring to their art. We celebrate their success and thank them for the joy and inspiration they continue to bring to our community.
Our sporting teams continue to shine, demonstrating strength, skill, and determination across the field and arena. Yet beyond the impressive results, what stands out most is the spirit of teamwork, camaraderie, and joy that comes from representing Stella together. Whether celebrating a win or learning from a challenge, our students are building resilience, discipline, and friendships that will last well beyond the season. Each game is not only about competition but about character—showing commitment, respect, and the pride of wearing the Stella colours.
We also extend our gratitude to the dedicated staff and coaches who guide, mentor, and inspire our students. Their passion and encouragement ensure that every team not only competes with excellence but also plays with heart.
We look forward to our Father’s Day Breakfast this Friday, 5 September, from 7:30am. This cherished Stella tradition is a beautiful way to honour the fathers, grandfathers, and father-figures in our community. Together with their daughters, they will share a morning of good food, laughter, and connection—a pause in the busyness of life to celebrate the love and guidance they bring. We look forward to welcoming many of you for what promises to be a joyful and memorable occasion.
Tonight we celebrate a truly special milestone—the Opening Night of our very first Cabaret: Broadway Through the Ages! For the first time, our College community will gather to experience an evening where the magic of Broadway meets the extraordinary creativity and talent of our students and staff. Over two nights, the stage will come alive with colour, music, and passion, showcasing the vibrancy that defines Stella.
Launching Cabaret is both exciting and inspiring. More than just a performance, it is a celebration of imagination, teamwork, and the dedication of our Performing Arts Department, students, and staff who have worked tirelessly to bring this dream to life. We are thrilled that our inaugural Cabaret is completely sold out—a wonderful testament to the support and enthusiasm of our community. Thank you for sharing in this first step of what promises to become one of the most memorable highlights of our College calendar.
As Term 3 unfolds, we celebrate the spirit that makes our College community so special—curiosity, courage, and connection. Let us embrace each opportunity to learn, to challenge ourselves, and to support one another along the way. By working together, encouraging one another, and striving for excellence, we ensure that every student can thrive and flourish. May the weeks ahead be full of inspiration, achievement, and the joy that comes from being part of such a vibrant and caring community.
Warm regards,
Sharyn Quirk

Debating and Library News
by Alison Tedman and Jess Willson, Acting Debating Coordinators for 2025
Last term, Stella Maris had two debating teams who participated in the Masters Academy Australian National Virtual Debating Competition. Representing Year 8 were Sophie M, Millicent C, Mabel B, Alana H and Genevieve O. Representing Year 9 were Erin R, Sophie O, Violet P, Lauren O and Ella M.
Both teams did very well and made the finals this term.
The Year 8 team debated against Regents Park Christian School. The topic was “That Antarctica Should be Protected from Tourism”, Stella being the negative team. Our students raised some excellent points and teams were tied in the clash count, only narrowly defeated in the final adjudication.
The Year 9 team debated against Al Sadiq College. The topic was “That no one should be allowed to post on the internet anonymously”, Stella being the negative team. Again, our team worked hard and raised insightful and interesting points but were unfortunately defeated.
Congratulations and thank you to these students for doing such a great job in debating this year. Information about the debating program at Stella in 2026 will be released early next year.
Mrs Mia Callanan is Head of Year 10.
Mrs Callanan’s father, Max Hitchins, generously donated two well-loved books to the Stella Library. Year 12 English students will be immersed in 'Chasing Gold' in 2026, while 'How to Develop a Memory Like an Elephant' offers valuable memory techniques—perfect for students looking to enhance their study habits.
Why Pair Historical Fiction with Research?
Reading historical fiction deepens empathy, letting us walk in someone else’s shoes—even from a different time—which helps us understand their struggles and emotions better.
It builds wisdom and critical thinking, encouraging us to question what we read, differentiate fact from fiction, and recognise lessons that still resonate today
Most importantly, it brings the past to life.
This prestigious award goes to Erin R and Evie W, our Puzzle Pit high achievers! It has been fun to watch the 1,000-piece puzzle grow. This is the sixth puzzle to be completed in 2025, by Stella students.
My HSC subjects: Biology, Advanced English, Standard Mathematics, Religion 2 unit, Textiles & Design, (and can provide tutoring for all Junior subjects).
Studying at UTS: Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) and Creative Intelligence and Innovation.
To Book a Tutor
Students can easily book a tutoring session by writing their name on the Tutoring Booking Sheet, which is available for viewing at the library desk. Tutors are available free of charge from Monday to Thursday after school.

Our athletics season has officially wrapped up, with the IGSA Championships marking the final carnival for our squad. It’s been an incredible season, with our best results ever!
The IGSA Championships were held on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 August at Sydney Olympic Park. Stella had a big squad competing across the two days. The rain held off enough to allow all events to go ahead. Our results were outstanding! Stella placed second in Division 2, and 9th overall. We will now move into Division 1 for the first time in 2026! This is a remarkable achievement in a very high level of competition!
A huge congratulations to Leanne B (Year 7) who broke the record in the 12 years 100m. Leanne also won the 12 years 200m, was 6th in long jump and was a member of the junior relay team who came home with the silver medal.
Congratulations to the following students who won medals on the day:
Well done to the other students who made finals:
The highlight of the day was the three relay teams making the finals:
Well done to all members of the squad on an outstanding season of athletics. Best of luck to the students who are competing at the NSWCCC Championships on September 15.
Congratulations to the U14 and U16 Futsal teams who played at the State Final of the NSW School Futsal Championships at Windsor on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 August. This is a huge tournament with schools from all over NSW. The Stella teams were outstanding!
The U16 team had a great day, going through the round games undefeated. They had a tough quarter final against Freeman Catholic College, which was drawn 0 – 0 at full time. The game went into golden goal extra time, with the Stella team unlucky to lose 1 -0. Congratulations to the U16 team who finished 5th in NSW!
The U14 team also had an outstanding tournament. After winning all pool games, they had a great win in the quarter final against Endeavour Sports College. The team moved into the semi final against Mamre Anglican school. It was a tough game, with the Stella team going down 3 – 1. Congratulations to the U14 team who finished in 3rd place in NSW and have now been invited to the National Schools Championships on the Gold Coast!
Well done to the Year 8 and 9 Stella Red team who recently played in the grand final of the NSSWPA competition. The Stella team has had an outstanding season, only losing one game since the competition commenced in early Term 2. The Stella team faced a strong and experienced Brigidine team in the grand final, but dominated from the start! The Stella students played strongly as a team, and won the grand final 6 – 1!
Congratulations to Stella Red: NSSWPA Intermediate Champions 2025!
Stella Red: Alice J, Isabella L, Eve K, Amelia M, Liv M, Heidi H, Ella B, Flo W, Piper B, Freya C, Sara S

Both teams had a great day, especially the intermediate teams who finished second in their division! Congratulations to all members of both teams:
The NSW Touch Football Regional Championships were held in Penrith this week.
The Year 7 and 8 carnival was held on Tuesday 2 September. Stella had three strong teams playing at this event. All teams played very well, with Stella 1 finishing 2nd in their pool, Stella 2 finishing 4th and Stella 3 finishing 3rd.
The Year 9/10 event was held on Wednesday 3 September. Both of the Stella teams had a fantastic day, playing a high level of touch and having fun as a team. They had a great game and were unlucky to lose 3 – 2 to the eventual winners of the tournament, Westfield Sports. This Stella team has now secured a place in the State Final on September 17.
Congratulations to Ellie F (Year 9) who represented NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Touch Football Championships at Tempe on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 August. Ellie’s CCC team won all of their round games to progress through to the final against NSWCIS. A busy term for Social Justice...
Sarah Metcalfe
Social Justice Program Coordinator
Last Thursday evening, our students took part in Gift Cook, whipping up hearty minestrone soup in record time. With the Thermomix helping to conquer the teariest job (onions!), students from Years 9 to 11 worked side by side, showing teamwork and care. These nutritious meals are more than just soup; they’re a way for our young people to give back to the community and support those facing challenges in the current cost-of-living crisis.
A big thank you to Yi (Amanda) L, Ivy P, Sophie O’B, Eleni H, Grace H, Natasha C, Chloe S, Sacha C and Cody R.
We have one last Gift Cook this term, Thursday 27 September. If you would like to be a part of this important community service work, please email Ms Metcalfe.
Your effort can count towards your Duke of Edinburgh community service hours or simply be a chance to put social justice into action, knowing the results will be going directly to people in our community who will benefit.
✨ Be the Change. Speak for Justice. ✨
At Stella, we believe in using our voices for the common good. If you are passionate about an issue in our world today such as:
This is your chance to step up.
The My First Speech competition invites students in Years 10–12 to imagine themselves as a newly elected Member of Parliament and deliver their first 90-second speech on the issue that matters most to them.
This is more than just a speech
It’s a platform for justice.
Winners will be flown to Canberra to:
By taking part, you are not only developing your voice but also carrying forward our tradition of justice, compassion and courage, values at the heart of Good Samaritan education.
👉 Entries close 15 September 2025. Find out more by contacting Ms Metcalfe to follow the next steps to enter the competition.

The U14 team also had an outstanding tournament. After winning all pool games, they had a great win in the quarter final against Endeavour Sports College. The team moved into the semi final against Mamre Anglican school. It was a tough game, with the Stella team going down 3 – 1. Gift Cook: Serving Up Soup and Solidarity
My First Speech Competition
